Welcome to my personal domain. Here, is where I give my opinions, ( my mentality is somewhat troubled ) share my graphics, along with some knowledge I learned along the way. This site was originally created out of boredom, but it is maintained with love. Seeing as how there are only two places in the world, over here, and over there, you know the drill, if you don't like it, nothing is forcing you to be here. FTP TUTORIAL

Alright, so i've decided to write a tutorial on simple FTP knowledge and basics, since a large number of people who are in need of hosting, do not have a clue what FTP is, and are also unaware that it is a MUST KNOW if you're planning on being hosted by any independant domain, such as mine. Because it will serve as your sites control panel. It is very useful for uploading folders, large amounts of files, large files, CHMODing, etc. Really time efficient. It's really not as difficult as it sounds, and once you grasp the concept of it you'll wonder what you ever did without it. I'll try to make it as clear, short, and painless as possible.

Okay, before we get started, i'm going to be using a ftp program called CuteFTP, you will need to download the latest version HERE, before you can continue with this tutorial. This version of CuteFTP will be just a trial version, so you'll need to either find a free one ( will leave resourceful links at the bottom of this tutorial for ftp software, help, etc. ) or purchase CuteFTP after the trial version expires, or, you can be bad and find a loophole or crack to make it last forever >___>.

Now, click on the file you've downloaded of CuteFTP, and follow the prompts to finish installing it.

When CuteFTP first launches, you will see a screen similar to THIS with the wizard, cancel out of this wizard and ignore it.

Next, click on FILE and then NEW and then FTP SITE such as THIS. Or alternatively, you can choose the icon, shown in the small picture on this page, to launch a new FTP site.

Now, a window similar to THIS will pop up, click on NEW and fill in the information as follows: (window may also look like THIS after you've logged in more then once )

LABEL FOR SITE: This can be anything you want it to be. For example: my site.

FTP HOST ADDRESS: ( You will need to ask your host this information ) should look like ftp.yourdomainname.net.

FTP SITE USERNAME: ( You will need to ask your host this information ) should look like you@yourdomainname.net.

FTP PASSWORD: Your FTP password.

Leave everything else as it currently is.

CLICK CONNECT

If all of your FTP login information was correct, you should receive a Welcome message after a few moments, CLICK OK.

Now, you should be at a screen similar to THIS. On the left, is your computers local hard drive ( where your site/files will initially be ), and on your right, will be your FTP account ( server, whatever you want to call it ) where you will be transferring your files and folders to, to create your site.

UPLOADING/TRANSFERRING YOUR FILES

Make sure that you are connected to your FTP, now on the left, click or double click the folders, etc. to find the files or folders on your hard drive you are planning on having on your site. Simply drage the folders or file(s) to the right where your FTP account is. ( Hold CTRL to select multiple files ) Notice HERE, at the bottom, you can see the transfer taking place, I always wait until it gets completed before starting on the next file or folder.

EDITING FILES

I personally edit and create all my files on my computer in a html editor such as notepad, save them, then in my FTP I then drag them to the right and overwrite that particular file. It's just safer/better that way in my opinion. However, should you choose to edit in FTP, you can simply right click on any folder or file in CuteFTP and select EDIT and it will open up CuteHTML for you to edit with. ( I do not reccomend this method, because if you do it this way, it will not save the the most recent file on your hard drive ) When through editing the file, select FILE and then SAVE TO REMOTE, then this will auto save your file and overwrite it in your ftp site.

CHMODING

This is a little advanced, for PHP/CGI users. You can ignore this if you're not using PHP scripts or CGI and such.

CHMODING is a method used frequently for PHP Scripts to set specific permissions, access levels. ( your script instructions will have your CHMOD directions inside those downloads, but this is how you do it ) Find the folder or file that needs the permissions set, located in your FTP Site, (right side ) right click on that folder or file and select CHMOD, like THIS. In the bottom where it says MANUEL type in the 3 digit number that the script calls for, for example "777", like THIS, then click OK and you're finished!

COMMON Q&A's

COMMON QUESTIONS I HAVE RECEIVED

Q.When I save my files, and try to upload them via ftp, all the characters in my html gets strange and changes...
A. Instead of saving your file in your html editor like this: page.php or .htm, or html, whatever extension you use Save them like this "page.php" WITH the quotes.

Q. I've uploaded all my files and folders, but when I try to access my site on the web with my URL, all I get is a folder directory like THIS.
A. You MUST have your main page titled "index.php" or again, whatever extension you use. So if you have no index page, change/rename your main page to index.php or whatever, as long as it's index.
